Distance: 5.5 Miles
Launch: Old Pungo Ferry Road Small Boat Launch
It looks like winter is finally loosening its grip on the Hampton Roads area, Virginia Beach almost made it to 60 today, with higher temps to follow soon. This is actually one of my favorite times of the year to be on the water, everything is still very calm and quiet, but you can sense that changes are right around the corner,
I took advantage of the weather, and went back to Old Pungo Ferry Road, for a trip to the North side of the bridge, this is a great place to paddle because the launch is easy, and there are some nice little places just minutes from the launch.
The first two thirds of the trip up Altons Creek, was fairly uneventful, except for the occasional turtle popping it head up, it was not until the turn on to the North Landing River that noticed a visitor, a river otter was investigating me while I was on its river, and followed me in to the ox bow, letting loose the intermittent bark, to let me know just whos’s river this was..
The ox bow is interesting, in that it is an old barge graveyard, where in the past old barges that had outlived their usefulness were left to rot. Just floating around and looking at all the interesting ways that nature reclaims different things, just a cool experience, but remember if you go there are a lot of jagged edged everywhere so use caution.
